It will be great if someone explains or provide an article which describes the differences between Collection.List vs Map in terms of implementation.

Basically there is no big difference in between the different. The underlying data store is / should be the same.
What you have to look is the possibility to have :
_ Them synchronized or not
_ Twice the same Key
_ Null's or not
_ ...

What you should do is use an interface that suites you & in the code only once instanciate the proper underlying type you will need.
