hi, A Web Server is one which provides a web container. A container in the sense an application which supports the life cycle of the components deployed in it. The container provides access to the component, low level or system level services required by the component deployed and many other services. So a web server provides a web container which can support only web components like servlets, jsps etc. An application server provides containers which can deploy enterprise components like EJB, JNDI naming service, RMI/IIOP service and a lots of services like these which a web server can't do - well most of them. Typically Tomcat is a Web server . JBoss, Weblogic etc are application servers. hope this helps all the best Vishak
