I've been looking for a JAVA Programmer with Point of Sale experience for a month. I'm not able to find one person that has a strong familiarity with both. I have found several Analyst's but no solid fits at all. I’ve searched everywhere.

Does anyone know why I'm unable to find her/him?? I'm getting ready to pull the plug on my search and tell the employer that I recruit for that they need to hire two people to do the job they are posting for one. Feel free to supply me with the ammunition for my upcoming battle and thanks!

Really any Software Developer with a reasonable amount of experience in Software releases and Java Desktop (Swing) should fit the bill.

With regards to Java A POS is simply another 600 x 800 App.
Desktop Software Application.

If there are Business Specifications and Use Cases set by the Business and Systems Analysts, then the rest will just fall in place.

Retail Terminology should not really be much of a concern.

There are plenty Swing Developers.

What I'd be looking for would be a Swing Developer who has used various Persistence Frameworks: Hibernate, JDBC, etc.
and has been involved in releases of enterprise software e.g: Spring, J2EE, etc...

Hope this helps.

You will be much better off looking for a developer with strong problem solving skills than someone who's experience fits some laundry list you have. You are very unlikely to end up with a quality developer that way.

See the discussion below on sites that help you fabricate, er enhance your resume to fit these kinds of lists to see why this is such a bad approach to hiring.

Having written Java Desktop Apps. and POS's, I think the problem solving skills is the minimal skill set needed.

Experience in Java Desktop releases would be my primary concern. I wouldn't really consider familiarity with Layout Managers being a problem solving skill.

Of utmost importance in building significant apps in Swing is the Layout Manager aspect.

If its a Point of Sales Program, make sure he/she knows and has used CardLayout as that 600 x 800 Screen would make sense using a CardLayout.

Problem solving should play a major role but it should be coupled with the necessary Desktop App experience. I think it is more important in Enterprise WebApps where most of your CSS's and page design is done by a Web designer.
